Three-Dimensional (3-D) Segmentation of Knee Cartilage from 3.0 T MR Images using a Graph-Cuts Technique

چکیده
Introduction Osteoarthritis (OA), which is a common cause of disability, is associated with degradation of articular cartilage. Quantitative evaluation of knee cartilage requires segmentation of the cartilage which is challenging and laborious. For instance, manual delineation of cartilage boundaries by an expert often results in several hours per case and is subject to analyst bias and error. Hence, we have developed a semi-automated approach based on a graph-cuts algorithm [1] for efficient and reproducible segmentation of knee cartilage from high-resolution 3T MR images. We also evaluated the performance of our semi-automated graph-cuts method and compared it to the performance of the conventional manual delineation segmentation method.

Automatic Segmentation of Articular Cartilage from MRI: A Multi-Contrast and Multi-Dimensional Approach
Introduction The regional variation in the morphology (thickness or volume) of articular cartilage is frequently used for evaluating the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis [1]. Quantifying regional cartilage thickness or volume requires MR image segmentation (classification) and three-dimensional reconstruction [2]. A number of computational methods have been used to automate the segm...
متن کاملLearning Local Shape and Appearance for Segmentation of Knee Cartilage in 3D MRI
We present experimental evaluation of a new fully-automatic method for accurate knee cartilage segmentation based on 40 test and 60 training images of the SKI10 set. The method is comprised of three main steps: bone segmentation, bone-cartilage interface (BCI) classification, and cartilage segmentation. For cartilage segmentation, reference patches are extracted from training images by comparin...
متن کاملMulti-surface, multi-object optimal image segmentation: application in 3D knee joint imaged by MR
A novel method called LOGISMOS – Layered Optimal Graph Image Segmentation of Multiple Objects and Surfaces – for simultaneous segmentation of multiple interacting surfaces belonging to multiple interacting objects is reported. The approach is based on representation of the multiple inter-relationships in a single n-dimensional graph, followed by graph optimization that yields a globally optimal...
متن کاملMorphological MR imaging of the articular cartilage of the knee at 3 T—comparison of standard and novel 3D sequences
OBJECTIVES This study sought to compare various 3D cartilage sequences and to evaluate the usefulness of ultrashort TE (UTE) imaging, a new technique to isolate signal from the osteochondral junction. METHODS Twenty knees were examined at 3 T with 3D spoiled GRE (FLASH), double-echo steady-state (DESS), balanced SSFP, 3D turbo spin-echo (TSE), and a prototype UTE sequence. Two radiologists in...
متن کاملCartilage Volume Quantification via Live Wire Segmentation1
Rationale and Objectives. A reduction in cartilage volume is characteristic of osteoarthritis and hence there exists a need for an accurate and reproducible method to measure in vivo cartilage volume. Quantification of cartilage volume from magnetic resonance (MR) images requires a segmentation technique such as the user-driven “Live Wire” strategy that can reliably delineate object volumes in ...
